As technology keeps on innovating and as smartwatches are becoming more popular, it begs to bring up the question, “Will watches become obsolete?” I have given this question a long thought, but as I did research and looked into the future, I came to the conclusion of this very question.
Watches will never become obsolete. While technology may be innovating faster, watches will not become obsolete because they are essential to fashion, pop culture, and time-telling. More specifically, mainstream luxury watches will continue to stay relevant.
Read on to view the whole article where I breakdown why watches will never become obsolete, what kind of watches will last forever, and my final thoughts about watches becoming obsolete.
Why Do People Believe Watches Will Become Obsolete And Why Will They Not?
There are plenty of reasons why people may think that watches will become obsolete, but the primary reason why people think that they will is because of technology. Since technology is constantly innovating and new features are being added to smartwatches, so many people believe that watches will become completely useless and innovative technology will make watches become obsolete.
However, I am here to tell you that watches, especially luxury watches, will not become obsolete because they play a massive role in fashion, pop culture, and time-telling. I learned this as I was doing my research about timepieces in general.
I wear my luxury watches to enhance and spice up my outfits, which has proven to work for me over the course of several years. Whenever I wear my luxury timepieces, I feel like the man, which is something that I haven’t found when wearing my smartwatch or other consumer electronics.
In addition, I have personally found that my watches quickly and reliably tell the time, which gives them the slight edge over smartwatches and technology: their inherent style plus the ability to accurately tell time makes luxury watches a product that will always be relevant and sought after.
Watch Making Is An Art Form
One reason why watches will never become obsolete is that watchmaking is an art form. Horologists and watchmakers spend painstaking hours creating the interior and exterior of watches to demonstrate their creativity and love for timepieces.
One thing about technology is that there is no love or passion put behind them: it’s a mass-produced product. However, with luxury watches and unlike smartwatches, it’s a way for watchmakers to convey their own creativity and provide a beautiful timepiece for others to appreciate, cherish, and display.
How does this relate to watches not becoming obsolete? Watchmakers crafting new, extremely detailed interior moving part designs as well as exterior designs are ways to keep luxury watches high valued and relevant in today’s day and age. If it weren’t for the artistry behind watches, the future for timepieces would not be too bright at all.
Are Mechanical Watches Obsolete?
Mechanical watches are not obsolete because they are significantly more fashionable than smartwatches and are great ways to efficiently tell time. As I found, it’s much harder to be different and stand out with a smartwatch, but with a luxury watch, it is significantly better at boosting your fashionability.
The main reason people believe that mechanical watches are becoming obsolete is because of smartwatches. Since smartwatches are a piece of consumer electronics, they are always being innovated and updated with new and improved features at an exponentially faster rate than mechanical watches.
However, since so many millions of people are wearing smartwatches nowadays, they will never have the stylishness or flare that a luxury watch brings. I personally found this out recently. Whenever I wear my Apple Watch Series 3 out in public or when I’m working out in the gym, I rarely get any compliments or looks and the reason is that there’s nothing unique about it.
But when I wear a mechanical watch like my Panerai Luminor Chrono or my Breitling Wings, I get plenty of compliments about my outfit and sense of style, and it also helps me accurately tell the time quickly similar to a smartwatch, which makes mechanical watches much more worth it in my opinion. This shows, as I experienced, that smartwatches cannot replace the fashionability that luxury watches provide.
If you have ever thought about the differences between a luxury watch and a smartwatch, I have made the perfect article just for you. I have written an in-depth article comparing a luxury watch and a smartwatch (more specifically, my Breitling Wings and my Apple Watch Series 3) and I have compared their utilities, design, purpose, and so much more against each other. What Watches Will Last Forever?
In total, the types of watches that will last forever are iconic timepieces created by big-name, mainstream luxury watch brands. The types of watches are the most popular and are highly sought after by the general public.
As I have done my research for why mainstream watches and watch brands have stayed relevant, I found that it’s because people hold view them as high-value products since they’re limited and made from household name brands.
All I had to do to figure this out was some thinking about the biggest watch brands in the world. Most of the well-known watch brands on the market are over a century old, but they’re still hot and relevant today because of their timeless watch designs, intricate craftsmanship, and improvements over the years.
But wait, hold on; If you have ever wondered why watches are so popular, I have made an in-depth article just for you. If you want to view the full post where I breakdown all of the factors that make luxury watches so popular, click right here!

At the end of the day, I firmly believe that watches will always stay relevant and will not become obsolete because they have such a big role in our modern-day society. I think that watches will only increase in relevance since they’re so popular and valued highly by even the biggest celebrities. The artistry put behind watches makes them a product to be appreciated and cherished for years.
As long as watch brands continue to create and manufacture exquisite watches, they will never become obsolete and they will stand the test of time.
